Lavineyard Farms: A Hidden Gem in Shasta County

Hidden in the rolling hills of Shasta County, Lavineyard Farms is more than just a u-pick flower farm. This family-owned farm (and vineyard!) focuses on education, hands-on experiences and fostering community.

During our recent visit, Lavineyard Farms founder Chen Narens shared the story behind the farm while leading us on a guided tour of the property. Chen and her husband Sam purchased the farm in 2017, with plans to build a large greenhouse and focus on hydroponic farming.

But when they discovered that the previous owner had lovingly curated and planted over 100 rare varieties of lavender on the Whitmore property, the couple was compelled to honor her legacy. Sam and Chen chose to nurture the existing plants while planning for new plantings.

“We built the farm from the ground up, “ Chen recalls, “learning everything from steam-distilling essential oils to creating handmade products.”

Today, Lavineyard Farms has become a beloved part of the Shasta County community, offering a variety of tours, classes and experiences for both locals and visitors.

Visit the lavender fields and create your own bouquet

Throughout June and July, Lavineyard Farms is a dream come true for lavender lovers. The fresh mountain air takes on a sweet fragrance, and the landscape is swathed in shades of purple and pink. Sam and Chen invite guests to meander down the pathways, discovering unique and unusual varieties of lavender, and gathering blossoms to create a DIY bouquet. The u-pick farm is open to the public on weekends, but midweek experiences are available upon request.

Lavineyard Farms showcases 147 rare varieties of lavender – in shades of purple, pink, yellow and white!

Explore the gift shop

The Lavineyard Farms gift shop is filled to the brim with all things lavender – dried lavender bundles, essential oils, candles, lotions, seasonings and more. Guests will also discover an impressive selection of tools for at-home gardeners and, of course, Lavineyard wines.

All of the lavender products offered at the gift shop are lovingly made by hand, with no preservatives or chemicals. Chen steam-distills lavender essential oils on site, making small batches to minimize waste while preserving freshness and fragrance.

Tour the vineyards and taste Lavineyard Farms wine

Shasta County’s volcanic soil, warm days and cool nights provide the perfect environment for Lavineyard Farms winegrapes. Sam and Chen grow five different varietals in their Italian-inspired vineyard. Lavineyard Farms offers tours throughout June and July, and guests can purchase Lavineyard Farms wine at the gift shop or take part in seasonal tasting events. Can’t make it to the farm? You’ll find Lavineyard Farms wine at select Whitemore and Redding shops and restaurants.

Participate in DIY classes and workshops

Lavender is only in season for a few months of the year, but Lavineyard Farms offers classes and workshops all year round. The goal of these classes isn’t just to teach new skills, it’s to create a sense of community and a deeper connection between Lavineyard’s customers and the land. Chen adds, “We host hands-on workshops and classes right at the farm. From candle-making and body butter blending to seasonal self-care classes, people get to experience the magic of the process. Guests don’t just buy the product – they learn, create and take home something they made.”

Chen is proud to have a collaborative relationship with the community. Feedback from classes helps to inspire and shape new products, making the farm a community hub – not just a retail space. She proudly states, “Some locals now return every season, it’s part of their wellness ritual and lifestyle.” Chen flashes a knowing smile and concludes, “Shasta County is a hidden gem – peaceful, scenic and full of healing energy. You’ll breathe deeper just being here.”
