7 Must-Visit California Gold Country Wineries

Women toasting with glasses of wine

During the 19th century, people traveled to California Gold Country in droves, risking everything to strike it rich. Modern day prospectors however, head to the Sierra Nevada foothills for a different reason –  to discover liquid gold in a glass.

California Gold Country wineries are quickly becoming just as much of a draw as the region’s storied Gold Rush towns and sweeping landscapes. Whether you’re an oenophile, an outdoor adventurer, or a history buff, be sure to add these seven standout wineries to your next California Gold Country getaway.

Ironstone Vineyards

Ironstone Vineyards’ Tasting Room is located in Murphys, California – a historic Gold Rush mining town. Over a century after the original gold miners worked the land, modern-day crews returned to blast and pick through schist and limestone – true “ironstone” – to build the winery’s dramatic foundation and wine caverns. First-time visitors should experience the Estate Tour, an immersive tour that weaves together the stories of the winery, the town of Murphy’s and the history of the Gold Rush.

Rombauer Sierra Foothills

Rombauer’s Carneros Chardonnay is nothing short of legendary, but some people don’t realize Rombauer’s vineyards extend far outside the borders of Napa Valley. While exploring California’s Gold Country, head to Rombauer’s Amador tasting room. Enjoy the gorgeous views while sipping a glass of Barbera or Zinfandel from one of their eight Sierra Foothills vineyards.

Boeger Winery

Boeger Winery’s roots can be traced back to 1849 – one year before California achieved statehood. Like many who flocked to California during the Gold Rush, the property’s original homesteaders ultimately found their fortunes outside the surrounding mines and mills – planting fruits, nuts, and eventually winegrapes. Prohibition halted all winemaking here, which changed when the Boeger Family purchased the estate in 1972. Today, Boeger is best known for their award-winning Barbera, but 30 unique varietals thrive in their Sierra Foothills vineyards – including Carignane, Refosco, Charbono, and Aglianico.

Wise Villa

Since 2009, Wise Villa Winery has crafted estate-grown organic and sustainable wines at their scenic Placer County estate. In addition to traditional tasting experiences, Wise Villa hosts lively events including crafting classes, pairing dinners, and even an “I Love Lucy”-style grape stomp.

Cooper Vineyards

Cruising through Gold Country on a sunny California day? Head to Cooper Vineyards to enjoy a glass of their single varietal estate wines on the covered patio. Don’t miss their Round Pen Rosé, a delightful 100% Grenache Rosé that’s racking up (well-deserved) awards.

Lava Cap

During the Gold Rush, glittering flecks of gold lured prospectors to the Sierra Nevada Foothills. In the early 1980s, the Jones Family combed through that same region looking for something equally alluring – volcanic soil ideal for growing premium wine grapes. Armed with numerous geology degrees and a passion for winemaking, the Jones Family recognized the potential of the area’s high-elevation terrain.  Today, Lava Cap prides itself on creating intensely elegant, full-bodied wines that reflect volcanic roots.

Brice Station Vineyards

Brice Station Vineyards is admittedly small, with only seven acres of vineyards, but they sure know how to put on a big show! This family-owned winery hosts an eagerly anticipated summer concert series. Nothing compares to listening to live music under the summer starlight, glass of wine in hand – and if you’ve never had the pleasure, just get your tickets now and thank us later.
